On the occasion of the current traveling exhibition regarding women artists working in Paris between 1850 and 1900, this session opens the floor to topics relating to female artists of the nineteenth century. Papers regarding both better- and lesser-known figures are welcome. Subjects to be explored might include developments in artistic education and associations, specific case studies of artists, artists’ critical reception, and explorations of patronage and the market for work by women artists in the nineteenth century.

The session chair, Jane R. Becker, is Collections Management Associate in the Department of European Paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She co-curated “Overcoming All Obstacles: The Women of the Académie Julian” (Dahesh Museum and tour, 1999–2000) and contributed to “Women Artists in Paris, 1850–1900” (AFA/Yale University Press, 2017). The session respondent is Laurence Madeline, former Chief Curator of Fine Arts at the Musées d’art et d’histoire, Geneva, and curator of the current American Federation of Arts traveling exhibition “Women Artists in Paris, 1850–1900” (Denver Art Museum, Denver, CO: October 22–January 14, 2017; Speed Art Museum, Louisville, KY: February 17–May 13, 2018; Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, MA: June 9–September 3, 2018).
