Our guiding principles for the organization.

About AHNCA

Founded in 1993, the association today has more than 250 members. AHNCA's goal is to foster communication and collaboration among all who are interested in art and visual culture produced between 1789 and 1914.

I. Preamble

The purpose of the Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art is to foster communication and collaboration among historians of nineteenth-century art through such activities as a newsletter, a journal, a listserv, and research conferences and symposia. These By-Laws provide a plan of governance for the Association consistent with its status as an Affiliated Society of the CAA of America and a 501(c)(3) organization.

II. Membership

Membership in the Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art shall consist of those persons who have paid current annual dues or have been elected Honorary Members by dues-paying members of the Association.

III. Meetings

  1. The Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art shall hold a business meeting during the time of, and in the same city as, the CAA’s annual meeting, or at such time and place as a quorum of the membership shall agree upon at its last annual meeting.
  2. The Association shall hold a minimum of one meeting per year.
  3. A quorum shall consist of those present in person or by proxy at the annual meeting.

IV. Voting

    All members of the Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art shall be entitled to one vote.

    V. Officers and Board of Directors

    1. Officers shall comprise, but not be limited to, the following:
      1. A President, who shall serve for a term of two years. The President shall preside over all meetings, shall have general management of the affairs of the corporation, and shall perform all the duties incidental to the office.
      2. A Vice President shall perform such duties and exercise such authority as may be assigned by the President. Should the President resign, be removed from office, become incapacitated, or be unable to fulfill his/her duties, that authority will fall to the Vice President, who shall become the Acting President.
      3. A Secretary, who shall serve for a term of two years. The Secretary shall record the minutes of each meeting and distribute them at or before the next meeting.
      4. A Treasurer, who shall serve for a term of two years. The Treasurer is responsible for all fiscal matters.
      5. A Membership Coordinator, who shall serve for a term of two years. The membership coordinator is responsible for maintaining membership records and soliciting annual membership dues.
      6. A Program Coordinator, who shall serve for a term of two years. The program coordinator is responsible for organizing the annual AHNCA sessions at the CAA meeting as well as the annual graduate student symposium and all other scholarly gatherings organized by AHNCA.
      7. An Editor of the Association Newsletter who shall serve for a term of two years. The Editor, with the assistance of the Officers and Board, is responsible for soliciting material and overseeing production of a semi-annual newsletter and distributing it to the members.
    2. A Board of Directors
      1. The Board of Directors shall be responsible, along with the Officers, for the administration of the Association.
      2. The Board of Directors shall include the seven above officers of the Association, and four other members at large, elected by the membership for a two-year term, to achieve a balanced representation of its interests. The executive editor of Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide, the electronic journal that is published by AHNCA, will also be a member of the Board of Directors.
      3. Officers and Board of Directors shall be elected at the annual meeting upon a call for nominations that is circulated electronically. Election results shall be announced in the spring newsletter.

    VI. Committees

    1. The President shall have the power to appoint members to standing committees with the approval of the Board of Directors.
    2. Members or groups of members may form additional committees so long as the Chair and the Board of Directors are informed.

    VII. By-Laws Effectiveness

      These by-laws and subsequent amendments shall become effective as soon as they have been adopted by a majority of the Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art at the annual meeting.

      V. All matters not covered by these By-Laws shall be governed by Roberts Rules of Order.
